Now that spring is here, many of us will be spending more and more time in our yards. Whether you’re a keen gardener or would just like to brighten up your outdoor space, making some simple changes to your yard can make it a much more pleasant place to be.
We all know that planting colorful flowers and maintaining your lawn are excellent ways to keep your yard looking fresh, but there are a great many simple things you can do on top of that to make a big impact. Today, we’ll be looking at 5 of them.
Furniture
The outdoor furniture you choose will completely depend on your own preferences and personal style, but there are lots of beautiful options out there that can really brighten up your garden.
Tables and chairs are, of course, a staple in outdoor furniture, but there are other options, too. Hammocks are popular choices because they’re super relaxing, easy to maintain, and they come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.
Bean bags are also a fun and functional addition to your outside space, perfect for guests or when you want to kick back with a cold drink and a good book. Again, these come in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can choose a style that best suits your vision for your yard.
Attract wildlife
At this time of year, wildlife is thriving. Making your garden wildlife friendly can make it a much nicer place to be and there are lots of things you can do to increase the biodiversity in your space. It can be surprisingly simple to attract wildlife into your yard – below are just a handful of ideas:
Create shelter
You can buy or build shelter for wildlife to give them a safe space to thrive in your garden. Birdhouses and bug houses are excellent additions if you’d like to attract some extra wildlife and they can also look really attractive.
Provide food
Food sources such as bird feeders and fat balls are excellent for attracting a variety of birds into your garden. You can make these at home or buy them from your local garden center. Just be careful that you keep the food out of reach from unwanted visitors, such as cats and pests!
Provide a variety of plants
To attract a range of wildlife, incorporate a range of plants. Trees are great for attracting and housing birds and squirrels, and flowers that provide nectar for long periods (such as crocuses) will attract bees and butterflies.
Create a pond
Not only do ponds attract a lot of wildlife (frogs, and much more!), they add an extra element to the landscape of your yard. You can dig your pond area to be as big or as small as you like, and they’re generally very low maintenance once you’ve built it and filled it.
If you can’t or don’t want to dig a pond, you can try the pond-in-a-pot method. This is where you buy a large container and use it to create a pond that can sit on your patio, deck, lawn, or somewhere else.
You can buy pond-in-a-pot kits online, and you’re likely to find suitable pots at most garden centers, too.
Spring cleaning
Spring cleaning isn’t just for indoors – your garden would appreciate a thorough clean, too. Sweeping up leaves, dirt, and debris can drastically improve the appearance of your outdoor space.
Home maintenance services such as pressure washing, window cleaning, and fence pressure washing will smarten up your outdoor space, increasing your home’s curb appeal and removing dirt and mold which can cause allergies.
Build a fire pit
Of course, you can buy portable fire pits for your garden and they look great, but having one built (or building one yourself) can look gorgeous. They’re simple to build and require little upkeep. Plus, they add in an extra social space to your garden – toasting marshmallows on a warm evening is a fun activity for people of all ages.
