If your roof has dark streaks running down it, especially on the shaded side, you are not looking at dirt or a worn-out roof. You are looking at something alive. It is one of the most common calls we get in Houston, and the good news is that it comes off. The bad news is that the method most people reach for first, a pressure washer, is exactly the wrong tool and can wreck the roof it is meant to clean. Here is what the streaks are and how to get rid of them without doing damage.
What the black streaks actually are
The stains are a blue-green algae, technically a cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa magma. GAF, one of the largest shingle makers, identifies the dark roof stains as this organism and explains that the dark color comes from a protective sheath the algae grows to shield itself from the sun’s ultraviolet rays (GAF). So the black you see is essentially the algae’s sunscreen.
It spreads through the air, which is why one streaked roof in a neighborhood tends to be joined by others. It also explains the pattern. The streaks usually show up first and worst on northern and shaded exposures, where the roof stays damp longer, and dew is the main moisture source. Owens Corning likewise notes the growth is commonly found on northern exposures with higher moisture (Owens Corning). If your streaks are heavier low on the roof and fade toward the ridge, that is the normal growth pattern, not a sign of a specific defect.
Why Houston is prime algae territory
Gloeocapsa thrives in warm, humid regions, and the Gulf Coast is about as friendly to it as anywhere in the country. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association notes that this airborne algae collects and grows on roofing and is especially common in warm, humid regions including the Gulf States (ARMA). Add Houston’s heavy dew and long humid stretches, and shaded roof slopes stay damp enough to keep the algae fed for much of the year. This is a maintenance reality here, not a sign you did anything wrong.
Never power wash an asphalt shingle roof
This is the single most important thing in this article. Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of mineral granules, and high-pressure water blasts those granules off. Once they are gone, the shingle ages faster and can fail early.
The roofing industry is unanimous on this. ARMA states that high pressure washing systems should not be used for algae removal. GAF says not to power wash shingles because it may dislodge granules and lead to premature shingle failure (GAF). Owens Corning is just as direct, warning not to scrub or use high-pressure power washing equipment because it will loosen and remove granules (Owens Corning). If a company offers to pressure wash your roof, that is a reason to call someone else.
The right way: soft washing
The method the manufacturers actually endorse is soft washing, which is low pressure doing very little of the work and a cleaning solution doing the rest. ARMA’s guidance is a mix of laundry-strength liquid chlorine bleach and water, applied with a sprayer, left to dwell on the surface for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then rinsed thoroughly with low-pressure water (ARMA). Owens Corning describes a similar approach with a bleach-and-water solution left in place for roughly 10 to 20 minutes before a gentle rinse. The chemistry lifts the algae so the water does not have to.
Safety is not optional here. Never mix bleach with other cleaners, especially ammonia, because the combination releases chlorine gas. The CDC is explicit that household chlorine bleach can release chlorine gas when mixed with other cleaning products (CDC). You also have to protect the yard. Bleach solution is hard on plants, so landscaping should be wet down and covered before you start and flushed afterward. The EPA notes that hypochlorite bleach is highly toxic to aquatic life, though it breaks down quickly in sunlight (EPA). And there is the obvious hazard: a wet, treated roof is slick, and a fall from that height is serious. This is the part of the job I would hand to a pro with the right harness and equipment every time.
Set your expectations: cleaning is temporary
Here is the honest part most sales pitches skip. Cleaning removes the stain, but it does not stop the algae from coming back. ARMA says plainly that the effectiveness of these cleaning techniques is only temporary and the discoloration will likely recur. In Houston’s climate, expect it to return over the following seasons. That does not mean cleaning is pointless. It means you should think of it as maintenance on a cycle, not a permanent fix, and plan accordingly.
The durable fix: algae-resistant shingles
If you are tired of the cycle, the real long-term answer shows up when it is time to re-roof. Algae-resistant shingles are made with copper, and sometimes zinc, worked into the granules, because those metals discourage algae growth. Owens Corning explains that its algae-resistant shingles use copper-lined granules to reduce algae growth, and GAF describes copper microsites that release algae-fighting copper over time. You can see the effect on ordinary roofs already, in the clean stripes that run below metal flashing and vents where trace metal washes down.
One caution worth knowing: bolting zinc or copper strips onto an existing roof is not recommended by ARMA, because the installation can create leak points and disturb the shingle seal. The metal-granule approach works best when it is built into the shingle at replacement, not retrofitted.
Is it actually hurting my roof?
Mostly, no. Both major manufacturers say algae staining is an aesthetic issue rather than something that harms shingle performance. Owens Corning states it has not seen evidence that algae deposits affect shingle performance, and ARMA says there is no scientific evidence that algae damages asphalt shingles. Moss is a different story and can cause real damage, so it is worth having someone confirm which one you have. If it is the classic black streak, the urgency is about curb appeal and resale, not structural failure, which means you can plan the cleaning rather than panic about it.
Getting it done
Because the safe method involves working at height with chemicals on a slick surface, this is a job where hiring out earns its keep. If you are seeing black streaks, the sooner they are treated, the less established the algae is when we get to it.
