When you’re hosting at home, there are lots of holiday preparations to consider. And it’s great if you can get your home in order just before the holidays come so that you don’t have to stress during what should be some of the best occasions of the year.

Get your guest room prepared
When you get your guest bedroom(s) ready ahead of time, you avoid last-minute panics before your loved ones come to stay. Prepare your guest bedroom by:
- Putting fresh sheets on the bed
- Adding fresh towels
- Deep cleaning the room
- Adding extra little touches like travel sized toiletries, candies,
- Adding literature and other activities
Stock up on food
We’re not saying you should panic buy. But getting your cupboards, pantries, and freezers stocked up with what you need before the holiday season rush starts will save you time (and stress!).
If you do some meal planning in advance, you’ll know exactly what food you need on each day that you have your holiday guests. This will really help you to choose which food and drink you stock up on and what you buy later.
Stock up on first aid supplies
We certainly hope no one gets injured or sick over the holidays! But if they do, it’s better to be prepared. Make sure your first aid kit is replenished with:
- Band-Aids
- Antiseptic wipes
- Cold & flu medicine
- Painkillers
- Heat packs
- Bandages
You’ll thank yourself for doing this in the unfortunate circumstance that there is a minor injury or sickness over the holidays.
Deep clean
The turn of the season is one of the best times to deep clean. And the holidays coming up is all the more reason to thoroughly wash and clean every part of your home, including (but not limited to):
- Rugs and curtains
- Trash cans
- Skirting boards
- Door handles
- Shelves and surfaces
- Light switches
- Air conditioning systems
- Gutters
- Wood burners/fireplaces
- Mattresses
- Windows, window sills, and window tracks
- Light fixtures
This is also a great time to do any DIY and home repair jobs that you may have outstanding.
Get a calendar
Whether you have a physical calendar that you hang in your home or you use an online calendar, this tip will help you stay organized. The holidays bring lots of different visitors and activities and it can be really hard to keep on top of who’s doing what and when. This is especially true if you have a big family.
If you don’t already, now is the perfect time to start getting organized and using a calendar. These family calendars are awesome because everyone gets their own column!
Organize the décor
Most of us will have different décor that we use for the different holidays. Before the season begins, get your décor organized and clean to make it so much quicker and easier to alternate between the different types of decorations.
This means washing your baubles, cleaning your Christmas trees, and even separating your décor into categories in boxes with labels. It may seem a little excessive, but organizing in this way will help you for years to come.
Give some areas a lick of paint
Painting your whole home is a big task. But you can still give it a fresh look and feel just by painting smaller, problem areas. Keep a lookout for chips, marks, and scuffs, and focus your painting attention on these small areas.
