Most patio cleaning goes wrong in the first ten minutes, before anyone picks up a hose. Someone mixes a bucket of all-purpose cleaner, starts at one end, and works across the whole slab including the four or five feet around the grill. The open patio comes up fine. The dark halo under the grill comes back darker, because cleaner and water pushed the oil further into the stone instead of pulling it out. By the second attempt it has set, and on porous stone that is close to permanent.

An outdoor kitchen is two different cleaning problems sharing one floor. The open patio is a hardscape job where the material decides the chemistry and the pressure. The grill zone is a grease job with a fire safety element attached, surrounded by stainless steel that reacts badly to most things sold as a heavy-duty cleaner. Doing them in the wrong order is the single most common way a Houston patio ends up looking worse after a cleaning day than before it.
Deal with the grease before anything else touches the patio
Organic growth and oil are not the same kind of stain and they do not come off the same way. Algae and mildew sit on and just inside the surface, so detergent plus dwell time plus mechanical work lifts them. Cooking oil and fat migrate down into the pore structure. Water pressure sends them deeper.
The method that actually works pulls the oil back up. Cover the stain with an absorbent, leave it long enough to draw, then sweep it away. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association describes exactly this for oil on segmental paving: cover the area with kitty litter, talc, fuller’s earth or diatomaceous earth, leave it on the stain for a day, then sweep it up (CMHA). For anything that has been sitting for a season, a poultice does the same job with more force. The National Park Service defines it as an absorbent clay powder such as kaolin or fuller’s earth, or even shredded paper, mixed with a liquid to form a paste that is applied over the stain (National Park Service). The paste holds the solvent against the stone long enough to dissolve the oil, and as it dries it draws the dissolved oil out with it.
This is slow and it looks like nothing is happening. It is still the right sequence. Degrease, let it work, sweep, and only then start on the rest of the patio.
The grill surround is a fire safety job as much as a cleaning one
Grease around an outdoor kitchen is not only a stain. The US Fire Administration found that 32 percent of residential grill fires start on patios, terraces, screened-in porches or courtyards (US Fire Administration), which is a much larger share than most people would guess. The same report puts residential grill fires at roughly 5,700 a year, with 57 percent of them falling in May through August. Houston’s grilling season runs longer than the national average, so that seasonal window is wider here.
Three things are worth doing every time the patio gets cleaned. Empty and wash the drip tray and catch pan rather than topping them up, because accumulated grease is what turns a flare-up into a fire. Never line the tray or the cook box with aluminum foil, which blocks the grease path and causes exactly the flare-ups it was meant to prevent. And check the clearances: the US Fire Administration advises keeping grills well away from siding and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches (US Fire Administration). Houston patios are frequently covered or screened, which is the other reason to be careful. Burning charcoal under a roof produces carbon monoxide, and the CPSC is blunt about the consequence: burning charcoal inside can kill you, and it gives off carbon monoxide, which has no odor (CPSC).
Stainless steel: almost everything in the cleaning cupboard makes it worse
The rust-coloured freckling on an outdoor kitchen door or a grill hood has a name. The Australian Stainless Steel Development Association calls it tea staining and describes it as discolouration of the surface of stainless steel by corrosion, a cosmetic issue that does not affect the structural integrity or the lifetime of the material (ASSDA). Houston’s humidity and pool splash-out both feed it. Knowing it is cosmetic matters, because the panic response is what causes real damage.
The rules are narrow and worth following exactly. The International Molybdenum Association’s guidance on architectural stainless is explicit that chloride-containing cleaning agents, including hydrochloric acid and hypochlorite bleaches, must not be used, and that non-stainless scouring pads, cleaning wool and wire brushes must not be used either (IMOA). That rules out bleach spray, most bathroom cleaners, steel wool and green scouring pads. The same guidance adds a detail that separates a good clean from a bad one: work along the grain of the finish, not across it. Cross-grain scrubbing leaves scratch lines that catch light forever afterwards.
Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth handle almost all of it. Where surface rust has already formed, a proprietary stainless cleaner made for the job is the escalation, not a bleach spray.
On the patio floor, the material sets the pressure
There is no correct PSI for a patio, only a correct PSI for a given surface, and the honest range is enormous. For historic and soft masonry the National Park Service recommends water washing at no higher than 300 to 400 psi, starting at 100 psi or below. For concrete paver cleaning, the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association describes machines applying cleaner and water at 1,000 to 4,000 psi. Both figures are right for their own material, and a homeowner who takes the second number to a travertine patio will destroy it.
Houston patios mostly fall into four groups:
- Travertine, limestone and flagstone. Calcareous, which means acid etches them. The National Park Service notes that acidic cleaners can be extremely damaging to acid-sensitive stones such as marble and limestone, causing etching and dissolution. That includes vinegar, which is acetic acid, and most bottled products marketed for removing calcium and rust.
- Porcelain and ceramic tile. Tolerant of pressure, but the grout between is not.
- Concrete pavers. The most forgiving, though the joint sand is not. A tight, high-pressure stream strips it and destabilises the field.
- Poured or stamped concrete. Usually sealed, which changes the whole approach. Our driveway and patio cleaning work on sealed decorative concrete uses a much gentler method than bare concrete for exactly that reason.
If you cannot identify the stone, treat it as the most delicate option and spot-test in a corner. Escalating later is easy. Reversing an etched limestone patio is not.
Grout and joints need a pH-neutral cleaner, not a stronger one
Grout lines are where a tiled patio shows its age first, and the instinct to reach for something aggressive is the wrong one. Sealer manufacturers are direct about this. Laticrete’s technical data for its STONETECH sealer states that highly alkaline, acidic, ammoniated or abrasive cleaners are not necessary for daily maintenance and may degrade the sealer (Laticrete). Strip the sealer and the grout absorbs everything that lands on it from then on, which is a worse position than the one you started in.
pH-neutral cleaner, a grout brush and patience does the work. Where the grout is genuinely failing rather than dirty, cleaning will not fix it and no amount of pressure will.
Sealing is where the Houston calendar fights you
Most sealers want a surface temperature between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and Laticrete’s data sheet specifies exactly that window, with return to use in 6 to 8 hours. From May through September, a Houston patio in direct sun sits well above the top of that range for most of the day. Early morning brings the temperature down but adds dew, and moisture under a film is what produces the milky haze people mistake for a bad product.
Two practical consequences. Sealing work in Houston belongs in spring and autumn, or in the narrow shoulder hours of a mild day. And the surface has to be genuinely dry first. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association advises allowing at least 24 hours without moisture or surface dampness before applying sealer to segmental paving. After a wash, that means waiting, not sealing the same afternoon.
Two small things that get skipped
Rinse properly anywhere food gets prepped or served. Cleaners and detergents are designed to be rinsed off, and the USDA notes that a subsequent rinse step is sufficient to prevent contamination (USDA Agricultural Marketing Service). A stone counter beside a grill is a food-contact surface even if nobody thinks of it that way.
Then deal with the water that stays behind. Planter saucers, umbrella bases, grill covers and low spots in the paving all hold it, and the CDC’s advice is to empty and scrub, turn over, cover or throw out any items that hold water once a week (CDC). A patio that has just been washed is the easiest time to spot where the water sits.
What I would hand over, and what I would not
Routine work is reasonable to do yourself. Soap, water and a soft brush on stainless, a pH-neutral cleaner on grout, an absorbent left overnight on a fresh oil drip: none of that needs a crew.
The jobs I would hand over are the ones where a mistake cannot be undone. Set-in grease on porous stone, where a poultice has to be matched to the stone and the solvent spot-tested first. Any acid-sensitive stone that has already been etched or hazed. Large tiled or paved areas where the pressure has to be right the first time. Sealing during a Houston summer, where the temperature window is genuinely difficult to hit.
If that is where your patio sits, it is the kind of work our team does as patio and deck cleaning, and it is usually worth pairing with a full exterior wash while the equipment is already on site, since the same growth that dulls the patio is normally on the shaded walls above it.
