A Houston pool deck takes a beating. Between the humidity, the hard water, and a pool that runs most of the year, green and black growth settles into the surface, chalky white calcium builds up along the coping and splash line, and the whole deck turns slick right where bare feet land. Most of it comes off with the right approach. The trap is the wrong approach, and there is a lot of confident wrong advice online, because a method that is fine on plain concrete can permanently etch stone or strip a cool deck coating.
The most important move is the one most guides skip: before you buy a single jug of cleaner, identify your surface. That one decision drives every other choice. Here is how I walk Houston homeowners through cleaning algae and calcium off a pool deck without damaging it, and how to keep it from getting dangerously slippery in the process.
Start by identifying your deck surface
Houston pool decks tend to fall into four buckets, and each one tolerates a different level of chemistry and pressure.
Cool deck coatings (Keystone Kool Deck and similar). This is the textured, color-tinted cement coating troweled over concrete to stay cooler underfoot. It is common on Houston pools and more delicate than it looks. The manufacturer, Mortex, is blunt about it: routine cleaning should be nothing more than strong soap, water, and a nylon-bristle broom, rinsed with a garden hose, and homeowners should not attempt muriatic acid washes, noting that “acid baths are not necessary or recommended” (Mortex care guide).
Travertine, limestone, and other natural stone. Beautiful, and acid-sensitive. These are calcareous stones, which means acidic cleaners, including vinegar and many off-the-shelf “calcium removers,” will dull or etch the surface. The Natural Stone Institute recommends pH-neutral, non-acidic cleaners and warns that products containing lemon, vinegar, or other acids can etch calcareous stone (Natural Stone Institute).
Concrete (broom-finish, stamped, or exposed aggregate). The most forgiving surface. It handles firmer scrubbing and, carefully, more pressure. Stamped and colored concrete still has a sealer you can dull, so it is not a free-for-all.
Pavers. Durable, but the sand-filled joints complicate pressure washing, which can blast the joint sand out.
If you are not sure what you have, that uncertainty is your answer: treat it as the most delicate option and start gentle. You can always escalate. You cannot un-etch stone.
Why Houston decks grow algae and scale so fast
This is not your imagination. Two things about our climate work against a pool deck.
The first is humidity. Mold and algae need moisture, and they take off once relative humidity climbs. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension notes that mold begins to grow when relative humidity rises above 60 percent (Texas A&M AgriLife), and the EPA recommends keeping humidity between 30 and 50 percent to hold it back (EPA). Outdoors in a Houston summer, we are living well above that line for months, which is why the shaded, damp side of a deck greens up first.
The second is minerals. Splash-out from the pool, hard tap water, and salt-chlorinated systems all leave mineral deposits behind as the water evaporates. Salt systems are especially demanding, and the coating makers advise rinsing salt decks frequently so salt does not build up. Put humidity and mineral-rich water together and you get the classic Houston pool deck: green growth in the low spots, a white crust along the edges.
Removing algae and black or green growth
Here is the rule most articles skip: your goal is to remove the growth, not just kill it. Texas A&M AgriLife makes the point directly, that cleaning must remove mold rather than only killing it, because dead spores can still cause problems. A deck that has been bleached white but not scrubbed will look clean for a week and then come right back.
So the method is chemistry plus mechanical work:
- Wet the surrounding plants and rinse the deck first. Pre-wetting protects landscaping and keeps cleaner from soaking in unevenly.
- Apply a correctly diluted bleach solution. For killing organic growth, the CDC puts the ceiling at no more than 1 cup (8 ounces) of household bleach per 1 gallon of water (CDC). More is not better. It just raises the fumes and the risk to plants. On natural stone, use an even gentler half cup of bleach, ammonia, or hydrogen peroxide per gallon, and never two of those together.
- Let it dwell, then scrub. Give it several minutes, then work it with a stiff nylon brush or a push broom. This is the step that actually lifts the growth out of the pores.
- Rinse thoroughly and let the deck dry.
A safety point I will not soften: never mix bleach with ammonia or with any acid, including vinegar. That combination releases a toxic gas, a warning the CDC repeats in its own bleach-use guidance. Work in the open air, wear gloves and eye protection, and add a mask if you are sensitive to fumes. It is also worth knowing that the EPA considers bleach and other biocides not a routine step in cleanup, so if soap, water, and scrubbing handle the growth, you do not need to reach for bleach at all.
Removing calcium scale and efflorescence
That white, chalky buildup has two common forms. Calcium scale is deposited from pool and hard water. Efflorescence is mineral salt pushed up out of the concrete or masonry itself. The Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association explains the chemistry: calcium hydroxide in the cement is carried to the surface by moisture, meets carbon dioxide in the air, and forms calcium carbonate, the whitish deposit you see (CMHA).
The key is to work gentle-to-aggressive, not the reverse:
- Dry brush first. Most efflorescence comes off with dry brushing followed by a clean-water flush. Try this before anything else.
- Flush with clean water and let it dry to see what is left.
- Acid only as a genuine last resort, and never on stone or Kool Deck. On bare concrete, a heavily diluted acid can be used, but the surface must be pre-wetted with clean water first and rinsed thoroughly after, and acid should be the last resort rather than the starting point. On travertine, limestone, or a cool deck coating, skip acid entirely. It will etch the surface far faster than it removes the scale.
A hardened calcium carbonate crust is genuinely difficult to remove. If you are facing a thick, set-in band of scale, that is a reasonable point to bring in a pro rather than escalating acid strength on your own.
Keeping the deck slip-resistant, safely
A pool deck has one job beyond looking clean: it has to be safe underfoot when wet. Cleaning affects that, and not always for the better. Polishing a surface smooth, or sealing it with the wrong product, can leave it slicker than the algae did.
The industry benchmark here is dynamic coefficient of friction, or DCOF, defined in the ANSI A326.3 standard. Flooring walked on when wet is generally expected to meet a wet DCOF of at least 0.42. The important caveat, and the standards body says this plainly, is that DCOF does not predict whether a specific person will slip (TCNA / ANSI A326.3). It is a guide, not a guarantee. In practice that means two things: keep the deck’s natural texture rather than grinding it smooth, and if you seal, choose a product rated for exterior wet areas rather than a high-gloss finish that turns the deck into a skating rink when it splashes.
Where pressure washing fits, and where it bites back
Pressure washing has a place on a pool deck, mostly on concrete and pavers, but it is the tool most likely to cause expensive damage in a hurry. On a Kool Deck coating or soft stone, too much pressure gouges and erodes the surface, and Mortex advises that heavy mineral-deposit cleaning with a high-pressure machine and a surface-cleaner attachment is work for experienced contractors, not a Saturday experiment. On pavers, a tight, high-pressure stream strips the joint sand and destabilizes the field.
If you do pressure wash concrete yourself, keep the pressure moderate, use a wide-angle tip rather than a pinpoint nozzle, keep the wand moving, and never use a zero-degree tip, which can etch concrete and cut skin. A professional pressure washing crew will usually soft wash instead, using cleaning chemistry and low pressure to lift growth without carving the surface, which is the safer default for most decks.
Preventing the next round
Cleaning is easier when you are not starting from a jungle. A few habits keep a Houston deck ahead of the growth:
- Rinse often, especially with a salt system. A garden-hose rinse clears splash-out minerals before they set.
- Keep it dry and clear. Sweep off leaves and standing debris that hold moisture, and improve drainage in any low spot that stays damp, since sitting water above that 60 percent humidity line is exactly what algae wants.
- Address the shady, wet side on a schedule. That is where growth starts, so a light quarterly clean there beats an annual deep scrub of the whole deck.
- Spot-test any new cleaner on an out-of-the-way patch before you commit to the whole surface.
When to call a professional
DIY makes sense for routine algae on concrete or a light cleaning of a cool deck with soap and a nylon brush. I would bring in a pro when the scale has hardened into a thick crust, when the surface is travertine or a cool deck coating and needs machine work, when a large area of growth has taken hold, or frankly when the safe method involves equipment or acids you would rather not handle around a pool.
