How to get your home ready to sell

The process of selling a home can be lengthy and stressful. Making the right preparations can relieve some of that stress, and allow your family to transition to your new home seamlessly. Everything that can be done ahead of time, should be! Don’t wait until the last minute when it comes to getting your home ready to sell. Ask for advice whenever needed, and trust in the expertise of your realtor to create the best possible experience.

1. Start outdoors

The first thing that people will see when they preview your home is the exterior! Invest in a power wash of your siding, pathways, fences, and decks to give your home a clean slate. Change the landscaping and brighten the perimeter with colorful flowers and well placed foliage! A great first impression can make all the difference.

2. Make any necessary repairs

Be sure to repair any cosmetic damage as well as any recurring problems that you are aware of. These problems must be disclosed to the buyer, and could be a deterrent. Make sure that your home is ready to live in, and will provide the next family with a safe and reliable place to make new memories.

3. De-Clutter and remove any unnecessary items from the main living areas

You want to give potential buyers a vision of what their home will look like at its best should they decide to move in, so make it look wonderful! Choose the best décor, de-clutter all living areas from items like magazines, shoes, and books, and really paint the picture of luxury!

4. Don’t add any extreme smells

When a buyer walks in, they should be relaxed and ready to explore. Smelling your dinner might not give a great first impression! Light a few candles, or just let your home shine naturally when it comes time for the tour.

5. Remove family photos

Potential buyers want to picture their own family in your home, so it’s best to remove any personal items like family photos. Your new home will be all your own, covered in your timeless memories, so let the one you’re trying to sell be a blank slate for someone else!

6. Organize your closets

Storage space is often a big selling point, so make it a point to organize them to showcase versatility.

7. Re-paint where needed

Bright colors may not be as appealing to your buyers as they were to your family, so re-paint with more neutral tones to create a relaxing atmosphere. Again, you want to create a blank slate for this new family to make the home their own.

8. Clean, clean, clean

It may go without saying, but clean your home! It may be helpful to hire a professional to do a deep clean of your home, just to ensure a thorough once-over of every room. Make sure that your home is as presentable as possible when it comes time to show.

Overall, your realtor will advise you on what will make your home the best on the block. Following these instructions will give you a great headstart, and relieve some of the stress associated with selling your home! Good luck!
