As a first time client of Advantage Pro Services, I couldn’t be more pleased! I needed roof and gutter cleaning as well as pressure washing of my driveway and sidewalk. I first spoke with Kelsie, the office liaison and she was very thorough and quickly sent me an email with an estimate/quote for the services I needed. After agreeing to the quote, they were able to get me scheduled the next day. Technicians Jesus and William notified me of their arrival and worked for 3 straight hours to complete the work, and did an excellent job! They were both very efficient and very friendly. I would recommend this company to anyone needing the cleaning services they offer and I will definitely be a return customer! Thank you! 7/7/25 This was my second service for my roof and gutter cleaning. I don’t know the names of the technicians, but they were very courteous. They did a good job of cleaning the roof and cleaning the debris that was cleaned off. My only note is that some of the debris was blown off onto existing planted beds and was not cleaned up out of those beds very well. The rest was cleaned up very well and I would recommend this company. I am continuing with my bi-annual contract with Advantage Pro Services 1/28/26 I have continued to be pleased with the service I receive from Advantage Pro Services. Alex and his crew were very thorough in cleaning our gutters and removing debris from our roof. Cleanup afterwards was excellent also. I am continuing my bi-annual contract with this company. 👍

What Happens if You Don’t Regularly Clean Your Gutters

Article by Michael A / March 28, 2023

What Happens if You Don’t Regularly Clean Your Gutters

If you’re like most homeowners, gutter cleaning is not one of your favorite household chores. You don’t exactly relish the thought of teetering on a ladder, your hands covered in muck, slogging through the unpleasant task of gutter maintenance. But have you ever stopped to think about what could happen if you don’t regularly clean your gutters?

Though often overlooked, gutters are the silent heroes of your home, ensuring the smooth flow of water away from the roof and foundation. Neglecting them can lead to various problems, some of which could put a serious dent in your wallet or, worse, cause severe damage to your beloved home.

So before you brush off gutter cleaning once again, let’s explore the dark side — the disasters lurking if you don’t regularly clean your gutters.

The Consequences of Neglecting Your Gutters

Failing to stay on top of your gutters’ maintenance will do more than clog your drains. As months of neglect add up, your home and foundation can be in danger. Here are a few of the most common problems caused by neglected gutters:

Roof Damage

Debris, such as leaves, twigs, and other organic matter, can block your gutters, filling them with water. As the level of the standing water rises, it will reach your roofing shingles, which can cause the edges of your roof to rot.

If undetected, the water might start penetrating the roof, increasing the risk of rotting. A rotten roof will eventually lead to leaks, resulting in costly repairs.

Foundation Damage

Gutters are designed to channel water away from the foundation of your home. When debris accumulates in your gutters, it prevents them from doing their job correctly. Water will likely overflow from them and onto the ground around your foundation.

As more water pools around the base of your house, the ground surrounding the foundation will soften, increasing the risk of cracking, shifting, and settling. The saturated soil can then affect the walls of your home and cause cracks in the foundation itself. The cracked walls mean water can seep into your basement, making it unsanitary.

Landscaping Damage

When water overflows from your gutters, it could harm any landscaping elements you have around your house. The water will wash away the topsoil, erode the sides of flowerbeds, and damage plants.

If the water doesn’t drain properly, your plants will become waterlogged, and their roots will start to rot due to standing water. Eventually, your beautiful plants and flowers will die, leaving your yard bare and lifeless.

Pest Infestation

The stagnant water in clogged gutters is a perfect breeding ground for certain insects and pests. Mosquitoes, cockroaches, wasps, bees, and birds love the warm, moist environment that blocked gutters provide. Rodents may also move into your gutters, creating a noisy and dangerous problem.

Having these uninvited guests in your yard can be dangerous to you and your family since some can be aggressive and even spread disease. They can find their way inside your home when searching for warmth and food, leaving you with an infestation. Some critters, such as powderpost beetles and termites, can also cause damage to your home’s structure.

Mold and Mildew Growth

If your gutters stay blocked for too long and water continues overflowing onto the sides of your home, it can cause mold and mildew to form on the exterior walls. Not only does this look unpleasant, but it can also lead to health issues.

Mold spores are allergens that can trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions in some people. If mold starts growing in your home, it might be expensive to get rid of it.

Ice Dams

If your gutters are clogged and the temperature outside is low enough to freeze, you could be in for a nasty surprise. When water overflows from your blocked gutters, it can freeze near the edge of your roof. The freezing water creates an ice dam that traps additional water behind it.

The ice dams can damage your home by pulling the gutters away from the house and causing them to sag. The added weight of the ice can also damage your roof shingles, leading to costly repairs. Furthermore, the dam of ice can cause water to back up and overflow onto the roof, leading to leaks and more water damage.

Damaged Fascia

The fascia is the trim board that runs along the bottom edge of your roof. When your gutters are blocked, water can overflow and soak into the fascia board, causing it to rot and warp.

Rotting will lead to additional damage as rodents, birds, and other pests might use the damaged fascia as a nesting area. Replacing the fascia board can be expensive, especially if you need to replace multiple boards.

Driveway Destruction

The runoff from clogged gutters can create ruts and dips in your driveway since the water won’t have anywhere else to go. The asphalt of your driveway may start cracking, and potholes will form due to flooding or ice buildup. Eventually, you’ll need to pay for costly repairs or a new driveway.

General Water Damage

When your gutters are overflowing, the water can seep into the walls of your home and cause damage to the interior. The water will leave unsightly stains on your walls. It could also enter your home under flooring, window frames, and siding.

The continued presence of water in the interior will cause the walls to bow, bulge in the floors and ceilings, and discolor the walls. Once the water makes its way inside your home, it can cause damage to your furniture and electronics. The excess moisture in the air could also lead to other problems, such as increased humidity levels and condensation on windows.

Irreparable Gutters

If your gutters remain clogged and neglected for a long time, they will start to rust. Rust can damage the seams of your gutters, causing them to break apart until they eventually fall off altogether. Replacing entire sections or even entire gutter systems is tedious and expensive, costing at least $1,000 in installation costs.

How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters?

Now that you understand what could happen if you neglect your gutters, you might wonder how often you should clean your gutters to prevent these issues. Professionals recommend cleaning your gutters at least twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.

However, if you have trees near your home, you should clean the gutters more frequently since the trees tend to shed leaves that clog gutters quickly. Inspecting your gutters after a bad storm or heavy rainfall is important since debris may have clogged the downspouts and caused blockages.

Other factors to consider when determining how often you should clean your gutters include the following:

Your type of gutters: Seamless gutters require less maintenance than traditional gutter systems, so you can clean them only once a year. Likewise, if your gutters have protection, such as gutter guards, you won’t have to clean them as often.

Your climate: If you live in a particularly rainy region, you should clean your gutters more frequently than in an area with little rainfall.

The slope of your roof: You should clean the gutters on flat roofs more often since they tend to funnel more water into the gutters, making them more prone to clogging. You should also check your roof often if it’s made of shingles, since they loosen and get into your gutters.

Your home’s architecture: The more the eaves and corners of your roof slope, the higher the chance for water buildup. Debris can accumulate in these corners, so you should inspect and clean them more often.

Proximity to wildlife: If you live in a rural area where there is a habitat for critters such as chipmunks, birds, and squirrels, you should clean your gutters regularly. These animals can place food items and debris in your gutters. The birds can also make nests inside the gutters, blocking the water flow.

Should You Clean Your Gutters Or Hire a Professional?

Cleaning your gutters isn’t difficult, but it can become dangerous if you don’t have the right equipment. You may need to use a ladder and climb onto the roof for better access, which can be dangerous if you’re an inexperienced homeowner. Furthermore, you may not have the necessary protective equipment, such as goggles, to prevent debris from getting into your eyes.

For these reasons, it’s usually best to hire a professional gutter cleaning service with the necessary experience, equipment, and safety measures. A professional cleaning company will be able to get your gutters clean quickly and safely while also providing you with tips on how to maintain them in the future. They’ll be able to identify any potential problems before they become expensive repairs.
